Moving Out: What Insurances Do You Need?

When you move out and start living on your own, there's a lot to manage. You get your own space and the freedom to come and go as you please. But it also comes with responsibilities, like managing your finances (with more expenses) and getting the necessary insurance. Which insurance are essential when you move into student housing? We’ve listed the most important ones for you!

Contents Insurance 🛋️

Contents insurance is the most important home insurance when you move into a student room. It covers damage to items in your home, such as your couch, washing machine, or TV. Items that are attached to your home, like a kitchen, are not covered by contents insurance.

With contents insurance, there are different levels of coverage: "all-risk" and "extra extensive." Most insurers offer both policies, so it’s a good idea to see which one suits your needs best.

You can save a lot of money on contents insurance. There are several organizations, like the Consumentenbond and Independer, where you can compare and find the most affordable contents insurance.

Home Insurance 🏡

While contents insurance covers damage and theft of items in your home, you also want your room itself to be insured against water damage or fire. Home insurance covers damage to the room itself. If you own a home, you need to arrange this insurance yourself. If you rent, your landlord is responsible for this insurance. However, it’s always good to double-check so you’re not caught by surprise.

Liability Insurance 🤕

Now that your belongings and your room are well insured, it’s also important to be covered for any damage you may cause to others. This could be material damage or personal injury, for example, if you’re involved in an accident. Before getting this insurance, check your parents’ policy. In many cases, as a student, you can be covered by their insurance until you’re 27.

If you’re not covered by your parents, you’ll need to take out liability insurance yourself. This can be done separately, but many insurers also offer packages that combine contents and liability insurance. Make sure to explore your options to find the best solution for you.

Student Health Insurance ❤️🩹

This doesn’t have much to do with moving out, but while you’re sorting out your insurances, it’s a good time to review your health insurance. Once you’re 18 or older, you must have your own health insurance. If you’re a student, you can use a "student health insurance" plan. Most insurers offer student discounts, which can save you hundreds of euros annually!

If you’re moving out, you may be eligible for healthcare allowance. However, this depends on your income.

Travel Insurance 🏝️

A weekend away with friends, a city trip, or a sunny vacation to the south. If you love to travel and explore the world, getting a travel insurance is a good idea. This insurance covers costs for things that happen on vacation, like loss or theft of luggage or accidents.

There are different types of travel insurance:

  • Short-term travel insurance covers a single trip. The cost depends on the duration of your trip. You can decide for each trip whether you want to insure it and what coverage you need.
  • Continuous travel insurance covers all the trips you make. This is handy if you travel frequently or spontaneously go away for the weekend. Another benefit is that once you take out a continuous travel insurance you don’t have to worry about it again. You only need to pay a monthly fee for the policy.

Legal Expenses Insurance 👨⚖️

No one enjoys conflicts, but they can happen, such as a dispute with your landlord. In such cases, having legal expenses insurance can be useful. This insurance covers the cost of legal assistance in conflicts, for instance, with your landlord.

Funeral Insurance ⚰️

Insurance for when you die? Yes, really. Even though you’re just starting your life when you move out, it can be wise to take out this insurance. While it’s not mandatory, it can protect your loved ones from high costs. A standard funeral can cost thousands to tens of thousands of euros. Funeral insurance covers (part of) these costs. And it costs less than ten euros a month.
