Study Finance for International Students in the Netherlands

If you are studying in the Netherlands, you may be eligible for ‘studiefinancering’, which also applies to international students. This means that you receive monthly funds from the government. If you complete your studies within ten years, this so-called ‘performance grant’ is converted into a gift, meaning you do not have to pay it back. This article explains the conditions under which international students in the Netherlands may qualify for study finance.

Performance Grant 🎓

The performance grant consists of three components: the basic grant, supplementary grant, and student travel product. In 2024, the basic grant is €302.39 per month, or €121.33 per month if you live with your parents. Besides this basic grant, you may also receive a supplementary grant, which depends on your parents' income. In 2024, the maximum supplementary grant is approximately €450 per month.

You are also entitled to the "student travel product," which provides free public transport on certain days and discounts on others. You must choose either free travel on weekends or on weekdays, with discounts available on non-free days. If you complete your studies within ten years, the basic grant, supplementary grant, and student travel product are converted into a gift, meaning you do not have to repay them. However, if you do not complete a study within this period, you must repay the total amount (plus interest).

Study Finance for International Students 🌍

If you are from an EU country, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Iceland, you must be enrolled in a study at MBO (level 3 or 4), HBO, or university level to qualify for study finance. You must also be between 18 and 30 years old.

Additionally, you must meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • You live in the Netherlands for five years or longer.
  • You work at least 32 hours per month or have a monthly income of at least 50% of the social assistance standard.
  • Your parent or partner holds Swiss or EU/EEA nationality and is or was employed in the Netherlands, earning at least half of the social assistance standard monthly.

For students with British nationality, the same conditions apply, but they must also hold a residence permit under Article 50.

Study Finance for Students from the Caribbean Region

If you are from the Caribbean and wish to study in the Netherlands, students residing in Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, or the Caribbean Netherlands may also qualify for study finance. However, the application process for students from these regions is different from the process for students residing in the Netherlands.

  • Apply for study finance at least three months before your program starts in the Netherlands by digitally completing the "Study Finance Application for Students from the Caribbean Region" form. You will also need to submit various supporting documents, so be sure to review the form carefully to determine which documents are required.
  • After your application is processed, you will receive an email confirming that your application has been reviewed, followed by a letter detailing your financing amount and start date.
  • You will also receive a BSN (Burger Service Nummer), which allows you to create a DigiD account. With this account, you can log in to "My Duo" and enter a Dutch bank account number where the study finance will be deposited to.

Study Finance with a Residence Permit

If you hold a type II, III, IV, or V residence permit, you are entitled to study finance and can apply through the usual process. If you have a type I residence permit, your eligibility for study finance depends on various factors. You can check your eligibility by completing the eligibility helper on duo.nl. Make sure to have your residence permit at hand when completing this helper.

🏛️ Tuition Fee Loan with Another Nationality

International students can also apply for a tuition fee loan, which is provided by the Dutch government. At the end of your studies, you must repay the loan (plus interest). You may apply for a tuition fee loan if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are younger than 30.
  • You are from an EU/EEA country, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. If you are from the UK, you need an Article 50 residence permit.
  • You are enrolled in a full-time or part-time bachelor’s, master’s, or associate degree program in the Netherlands.
  • The program lasts at least one year.
  • You are pursuing an accredited program. If you are unsure about the accreditation, contact your educational institution, as they provide this information.
